Join us for the launch of two new exhibitions, Primavera: Young Australian Artists and Us by Gillian Bencke.
Primavera: Young Australian Artists, the MCA Australia’s annual exhibition for artists aged 35 years and under, presents work by six early-career artists who challenge society’s prescribed structures to deliver compelling alternatives to the status quo. Each artist, drawing on their lived experiences, reckons with the perils of history, education, culture and language to question authoritative structures and systems.
Gillian Bencke’s work re-imagines commonly collected items - ephemera, keepsakes, heirlooms from personal and institutional collections through a textile-based practice. Interested in how individuals and communities collect, preserve and exhibit artefacts, her work examines how we, as a society, define and reinforce culture and assign value and meaning to material objects.
The exhibitions will be launched by Primavera: Young Australian Artists curator, Talia Smith. Talia Smith is an artist and curator from Aotearoa/New Zealand who is now based in Sydney. She has curated exhibitions for organisations such as the Singapore International Photography Festival, IMA, UTS Gallery, Ballarat Foto Biennale and Cement Fondu, among others. Her writing has appeared in various publications such as Memo Review, Art New Zealand and artist catalogue essays and books. She has completed research residencies in Singapore and Germany and currently works as the curator at Granville Centre Art Gallery.
